GENERAL NOTICE

NOTICE 2986 OF 2014

PROVINCIAL HERITAGE RESOURCES AUTHORITY - GAUTENG

FORMAL DECLARATION

By virtue of powers vested in the Provincial Heritage Resources Authority- Gauteng in terms of
              Section 27 (6) of the National Heritage Resources Act, 25 of 1999, the PHRA-G hereby
              declares "the grave of Mr. Samuel Hambakwakhe "Fuba" Ntuli located at the Thokoza
              Schoeman Cemetery, Thokoza, Ekurhuleni as a provincial heritage site.
              Site Significance

"Unifier and Civilian at Heart"

Samuel Hambakwakhe "Fuba" Ntuli was born in Piet Retief on the 24th October 1961 and was
              assassinated on the 29th September 1991. He joined the struggle against apartheid in the early
              1970's and became politically conscious after the SOWETO June 16 uprising. He was also
              instrumental in the formation of the play "Woza Albert" with Percy Mtwa and Mbongeni Ngema.

He was instrumental in the formation of the Thokoza Civic Association in 1983. Through this
              organization he rallied with his comrades on the rent issues and mobilization of the Youth. His
              commitment to politics escalated in 1979 resulting into the formation of the East Rand Peoples
              Organisation (ERAPO). He also participated in the formation of the Youth Congresses on the
              East Rand including the Congress of South African Students (COSAS).

Ntuli was detained in 1984 to 1985 under the State of Emergency at Modderbee Prison.
              Following his release he continued to serve in the executive committee of the civic movement.
              He was then rearrested upon the declaration of another State of Emergency for a period of two
              years. Upon his release from prison, he was part of the comrades who established the Civic
              Association of Southern Transvaal (CAST) and was elected the Secretary General at its launch.
              He met with both exiles and political leadership of the ANC including the late Walter Sisulu and
              President Nelson Mandela at his Thokoza home to discuss issues affecting the people on the
              East Rand.

Samuel Hambakwakhe "Fuba" Ntuli was a father of six, extremely sociable and an intellectual.
              He was no elitist and took the views of the ordinary people seriously.
